EDITED VOLUME

The collisions of music/sound and sport are so common they often go overlooked as popular culture phenomena. Yet the integration of music/sound in sport has become synonymous with the experience of sport itself—from “walk-up” songs and seventh-inning sing-alongs in Major League Baseball, to warm-up playlists and anthem openers in the NBA, the ubiquitous squeaks of sneakers on indoor basketball courts and distinctive grunts on tennis courts around the world. It is difficult to imagine surfing culture without the “California Sound,” the NFL Super Bowl without its highly-anticipated halftime show, collegiate football without fight songs, Brazilian Capoeira without its traditional percussive accompaniment, or the FIFA World Cup without its official anthems. This edited volume aims to explore the relationships between music/sound and sport, examining key moments, figures, and histories to highlight the socio-cultural influences, implications, and historical reverberations of their intersection.
